Died at the Front in 1918 whilst defending Villers Bretonneux

April 2018 marks 100 years since the death of Arthur Friedrich Schmidt.

Arthur was the Great Grandson of JSG Hoffmann (Grandson of JSG and Hulda (nee Piltz) Hoffmann)

This year Arthur’s ultimate sacrifice was very much on my mind as I marched at the Dawn ANZAC service at Speers Point

Arthur was the subject of a citizenship aspect my son’s Queen’s Scout award from around 4 years ago. A couple years ago we were lucky enough to be able to put a face to the name when a box of (what turned out to be) memorabilia was rescued from being cleaned out and one of the treasures inside was a photo of Arthur in uniform.

He was exhumed and then laid to rest around 2 years after his death from wounds at the Beacon Cemetery, Sailly-Laurette, France.
